Planning for a Safe New Year’s 2018

What is your New Year’s Resolution? You still have plenty of time to think about it, as well as what your plans are for ringing in the New Year. But as you consider these things, you should also be aware – New Year’s is one of the most dangerous days of the year. During the New Year’s season, it is estimated around 95 million Americans will be on the road to visit family and friends. Almost half of all car accidents on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are caused by drinking and driving.

That said, here are some tips to help you keep yourself – and your friends and family – safe during one of the biggest celebrations of the year.

  1. It goes without saying: don’t drink and drive. Plan ahead before you head out for the evening. If you have a friend who does not drink and is willing to be the designated driver, that’s great! If not, there are dozens of different options to get around without driving drunk. Call an Uber – you don’t want to spend the beginning of the year in jail, or worse.
  2. Don’t binge drink. Pace yourself. Not only will this allow you to keep your wits about you throughout the evening, it will help prevent a terrible hangover. One standard drink per hour is usually a good pace.
  3. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water.
  4. Eat before you drink and snack while you drink.
  5. Don’t fall for myths about how to sober up faster. Coffee and greasy food might sound like good ideas after drinking, but nothing can actually sober you up except time.

If you are injured by a drunk driver on New Year’s in San Luis Obispo, our law firm can help.

Did You Know Thanksgiving is One of the Most Dangerous Holidays?

Passenger Injured in a Car AccidentThanksgiving is just around the corner, and you probably already have plans to meet up with family and friends for food, football and fun. Thanksgiving is one of the most traveled holidays of the year. And for an overwhelming majority of people, travel by car will be the transportation method of choice.

This holiday has a dark side, however. Thanksgiving is one of the most dangerous holidays to be on the road. Unfamiliar roads, late night driving and especially intoxication contribute to a high number of car accidents. Statistically speaking, Thanksgiving regularly rates among the top holidays for drunk driving fatalities. The day prior to Thanksgiving (sometimes known as Black Wednesday, Blackout Wednesday, Drinksgiving and Thanksgiving Eve) is one of the busiest nights of the year for bars.

Here is a list of tips to help keep you safe and make sure your Thanksgiving goes off without a hitch.

  • Make sure your vehicle is in working order. Prior to the holiday, fill your gas tank, air up your tires and make sure your wiper fluid is full.
  • When driving, make sure to wear a seat belt. Many victims of fatal car accidents during Thanksgiving are not wearing seat belts.
  • Drivers should be well-rested and alert.
  • When driving in work zones, use caution. Slow down and obey all signs.
  • Avoid distractions, especially cell phones.
  • Obey the speed limit.
  • Clean your headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows.

If you are involved in an accident with a drunk driver:

  • Seek medical attention, even if you do not believe you have been seriously injured. Some injuries, like traumatic brain injury, may not manifest symptoms right away.
  • Document the scene of the crash. Take pictures of all vehicle damage, all injuries and get contact information from all witnesses.
  • Discuss the accident in a free consultation with a personal injury attorney.

Boy Hit on Crosswalk By Truck While Riding His Bicycle

“It simply didn’t sit well with us that this young man was allowed to be run over in a crosswalk, sustain serious injury, and not receive any compensation for his loss.

DK Global’s video brough to life our main argument – that the Defendant’s perspective gave him ample notice to see the Plaintiff, and avoid this incident altogether.

That is why our client is now enjoying a settlement that will take care of him for years to come.”

Motorcyclist taken to hospital after collision in Paso Robles

A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries suffered in a collision with another vehicle Monday afternoon in Paso Robles.

It happened at about 2:30 p.m. at Spring and 7th streets.

According to police, witnesses said the driver of a sedan was turning left from 7th Street onto Spring Street and struck the motorcycle. Police say the driver’s view was partially obstructed because of a truck parked along the road.

The male motorcycle rider was reportedly ejected from his bike onto the street. The extent of his injuries is unknown. The driver of the sedan was not hurt.

The intersection was closed to traffic while officers conducted their investigation.

Authorities Identify Woman Killed By Train In Montecito

Authorities have released the name of the woman who was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train on Saturday afternoon in Montecito.

Elaine Enick, 62, of Montecito was fatally injured when she was hit by the northbound Pacific Surfliner at about 3:20 p.m. in the area of Butterfly Lane, said Kelly Hoover, a spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

The conductor of the northbound Pacific Surfliner told investigators that Enick was walking along the side of the tracks, and the train’s horn was sounded to warn her.

Moments later, she stepped onto the tracks and was struck and fatally injured, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

“The sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Hoover said.
