San Luis Obispo, CA, Aug. 29 - A $6 million lawsuit has been filed against the owner of the Kris Karr apartments in San Luis Obispo

Lawyers for the family of Nathan Young filed the suit claiming that the party atmosphere at the apartment's lead to Young's death.

Young died during a fight that broke out at the Kris Karr apartments.

Attorney James McKiernan represents the Young family in the multi-million dollar lawsuit. He claims that the property owner at Kris Karr should have taken a more active role in preventing parties and underage drinking.

"We believe that had the reporting occurred that the underage party most likely would have been disbanded," said McKiernan. "And there's a strong likelihood that Nathan would be alive today."

Records in the suit show that San Luis Obispo Police have responded to the Kris Karr apartments 117 times in the last four years.

The property owner declined to comment saying that he has yet to see a copy of the suit and could not respond to it.

Although the suit addresses only the Kris Karr apartments, lawyers hope property owners and property managers all across San Luis Obispo will make changes.

Anthony Mendolia pled no contest to hitting Cuesta College student Nathan Young and killing him. Mendolia is also named in the lawsuit and is serving one year in the county jail for involuntary manslaughter charges.
